The pulp inside a tooth can become infected if bacteria reach the area from a deep cavity, a crack in the enamel, or repeated dental treatments. When the pulp becomes infected, a root canal treatment can relieve the pain, clean out the infection, and ultimately save the tooth. Here at McMillan Family Dental, we provide top-quality root canal treatments.
Root Canal Treatment
Every tooth has a root canal inside it. There’s a soft tissue, called the pulp, located inside that canal. The pulp is vital to the health of the tooth because it provides essential nutrients and houses the tooth’s nerve center. However, the pulp can become damaged or infected if a deep cavity or crack in the enamel occurs, which will cause your significant tooth pain and typically require root canal treatment.
Root canal procedures can save your tooth by removing problematic pulp before something more severe happens. We begin our procedure with a local anesthetic injection to the infected and surrounding area to numb your tooth. To ensure the tooth remains dry and clean during the procedure, a dental dam is placed around the affected tooth. We then drill the tooth from the top. The pulp is then removed, and we irrigate the root canal to flush out any remaining bacteria.
To prevent further decay from developing, we apply an antimicrobial solution. Once the chamber is fully dried and cleaned, we fill in the space with gutta-percha. The last step is placing a dental crown to fully restore the tooth.
If you are experiencing tooth pain, you may need root canal treatment.
