Dental Sealants are a great way to prevent food particles or bacteria from getting trapped in the grooves and depressions of your back teeth. They also create a smoother surface that is easier to clean and maintain. At McMillan Family Dental, we offer dental sealants that can be applied in only one visit.
Molars and premolars have a particularly acute risk of tooth decay. Their increased risk of tooth decay can be attributed to the anatomical structure of their chewing surfaces, which feature grooves and depressions that can sometimes be too deep or narrow to clean with just the bristles of your toothbrush. When this happens, food particles and bacteria can get trapped in the back teeth. Over time, these food particles or bacteria can lead to damage or decay on the enamel. Even with good oral hygiene habits, tooth decay can still occur if the trapped bacteria isn’t cleaned out.
That’s where we come in. At , we offer dental sealants that can prevent this from happening. The application of dental sealants is fast and painless, and they can be applied during a regular checkup.
We will first clean out the molars and premolars of any existing damage or decay to ensure that none stay trapped underneath the dental sealant. Then, an etching gel will be used to roughen the surface and create a more conducive bonding process. The dental sealant will be painted on and allowed to bond and dry. This sealant will act as a thin coating on the top of the back teeth, and will not impact your normal diet or routine. Once we adjust for your bite, you can immediately return to your normal routine!
